The best thing in life is smiling

Even Darwin has written about the smile! For the author of the theory of evolution, the act of smiling makes us feel better. It is not the result of feeling good. Unfortunately, many people do not think this way.

According to writer and speaker Ron Gutman, British researchers have found that one single smile can produce the same level of cerebral stimulation than 2,000 chocolate bars! And, contrary to the harmful effects of too much chocolate ingested, smiling a lot can help reducing the level of hormones that increase stress, such as cortisol, adrenaline, and dopamine, and can increase the level of hormones that elevate mood, such as endorphins, and reduce blood pressure.

The same British study has found that smiling is as stimulating as receiving 16,000 sterling pounds cash (something like 24,000 dollars per smile).

In Sweden, a study from Uppsala University has found that it is very difficult to frown when you are looking at someone who smiles. That is because smiling is contagious and e destroys the control that we usually have in our facial muscles.

A study from Pennsylvania State University (USA) has found that, when we smile, we seem more helpful, courteous, and competent.

And, perhaps, the most surprising thing: in 2010, a research project from Wayne State University (USA) examined old baseball sticker albums. The researchers found that the players who did not smile lived in average 72.9 years.  Meanwhile, the players who had a broad smile lived in average 79.9 years. Some people can think that this was just a coincidence, but it is noteworthy that it is a scientific research.

All this shows how important is smiling, and how we, dentists, have our share of responsibility in this matter ― the patient has his/her share of responsibility in keeping his/her smile healthy, following the recommendations we give. Dentistry has evolved greatly in recent years, new materials have emerged, to provide more beautiful and happy smiles. Because, after all, the best thing in life is smiling!
